A Pre-algebra course in college is intended for students who need remedial instruction to prepare them for the study of algebra. This course generally precedes Elementary (or Introductory) Algebra which is also a remedial course. Success in college level math courses requires the knowledge and skills taught in these courses.
The concepts taught in the course cover basic arithmetic skills as well as an introduction to algebraic thinking, measurement and geometry, probability and statistics. Lessons in this course may include operations on whole numbers, fractions, decimals and integers; ratio, proportion, and percentages; order of operations and evaluating expressions; simplifying expressions and solving equations; solving word problems; characteristics of geometric figures; units of measurement; perimeter, circumference, area, and volume; graphing and representing data and making predictions using probability.
