The MTEL Elementary Mathematics test is required for those who want to be certified to teach grades 1 through 6 in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are designed to measure a candidate's knowledge of the subject matter contained in the test objectives for each field.
The computer-based test questions are a combination of multiple-choice and open-response assignments. Calculators are not allowed on this exam. The five subareas of the test are: I. Number Systems and Operations, II. Algebraic Thinking and Relations, III. Geometry, IV. Measurement, Data, and Probability, and V. Integration of Knowledge and Understanding. The passing score for this exam is 240.
