Students learn to multiply a binomial times a trinomial, such as (r – 7)(r^2 + 6r + 2), by distributing each of the terms in the binomial through the trinomial, then combing like terms. Students also learn to simplify a binomial cubed, such as (3c – 2)^3, by rewriting the problem as (3c – 2)(3c – 2)(3c – 2), FOILing the first two binomials together, then multiplying the resulting trinomial times the last binomial, and combining like terms.
