The FTCE Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3 (053) test is required for educators seeking licensure to teach Pre-kindergarten to Grade 3 in the state of Florida. The exam is composed of four subtests. However, test takers are no longer required to sit for all four subtests at one time. The subtests are: 1. Developmental Knowledge (531), 2. Language Arts and Reading (532), 3. Mathematics (533), and 4. Science (534). The first two subtests each contain 50 multiple-choice questions, while the second two subtests contain 40 multiple-choice questions each. The skills tested on the mathematics portion of the exam fall under five competencies.
These competencies are 1. Knowledge of number concepts and operations in base-10, 2. Knowledge of algebraic thinking, 3. Knowledge of measurement, data collection, and analysis, 4. Knowledge of geometry and spatial concepts, and 5. Knowledge of student reasoning and instructional practices. A reference sheet is provided for the mathematics subtest, but the use of a calculator is not allowed. Therefore, candidates should make sure that they review basic math facts prior to taking the exam.
