The National Evaluation Series teacher certification program has redeveloped the Essential Academic Skills test. Similar to the older version, the new version of the Essential Skills exam has three subtests: Reading (005), Writing (006), and Mathematics (007). The purpose of the test is to assess readiness for enrollment in a university program for educator preparation or, in some states, to determine whether a new graduate is qualified to become a licensed teacher.
This new version of the test was first administered in October 2022. It is important to note, however, that the older version of the exam is still being administered. In order to decide which of these tests is needed, teacher certification candidates should check with the agency in charge of licensure for their state. In addition to measuring knowledge of algebra and geometry, the mathematics subtest (007) of the NES EAS test assesses topics such as quantitative skills, representing data and statistics.
