YourTeacher is also revolutionizing the textbook industry with our patent-pending math iBooks textbooks for the flipped classroom.

Our Story

In 1998, Mike Maggart was a high school math teacher at one of the top private schools in the U.S. Like many math teachers, he worked in the evenings as a private tutor. As he traveled from house to house, Mr. Maggart was frustrated by the inefficiency and exclusiveness of private tutoring — he could only reach a few students each night, and only the wealthiest students could afford it.

Through this experience, Mr. Maggart recognized the need for a completely new way of delivering math instruction. His idea was to use technology to replicate the entire private school math classroom experience for any student, anywhere and anytime.

Enlisting the expertise of a multimedia developer, Michael Shappell, Mr. Maggart initially created a series of Algebra 1 lessons on CD-ROM, which he piloted with his own students. The first day the program was available, he left 15 CD's in the library for the students to check out, and they were gone within minutes. The next day he left 30, the next 50, and so on. Encouraged by the response from his students, he began development on a complete Algebra 1 course, and in January of 2000, Mr. Maggart and a business partner, Charles Hermes, founded YourTeacher.

Over the years, YourTeacher has grown from an idea out of a private school math classroom by an Algebra 1 teacher into a leading digital publisher specializing in middle school, high school and college level math. Our subscription website, MathHelp.com, together with our extensive line of math apps, have provided hundreds of thousands of students with math tutoring, standardized test prep, and homeschooling.
